Separable Diamond-Shaped Filtering For Hybrid HDTV Image Sequence Coding

This work is a contribution to the Spread Spectrum project for terrestrial HDTV broadcasting and focuses mainly on the coding of a low frequency signal with certain requirements. A new multiresolution decomposition scheme based on separable Diamond-shaped ltering is proposed. It takes advantage of Gaussian lters to extract smooth-looking frequency bands from the original signal. The deliberately introduced oversampling seems to be much more suitable for eecient coding. The requirements of very high reconstruction quality, at a bit-rate of 4 Mbit/sec, are achieved using an interframe Discrete-Cosine-Transform and entropy coding.
